Project #4 Bird House Ornament
I’ve always liked to give handmade gifts at Christmastime. Crochet items are often packaged up and mailed abroad to family and friends. Creating the projects in the 2017 Christmas Ornament Tutorial Series has really been a joy for me. These are ornaments I’d like to see on my own tree, and can be created with kids and family members with a little advance planning.
Start with die cutting the Largest scalloped oval from Layering Ovals dies in Whisper White card stock. Find the same size straight edge oval die and cut one piece from Soft Suede. Adhere the white on top of the brown.
From Home Sweet Home Thinlits dies, die cut one house in Crumb Cake. Use the circle in this set to cut out a “hole” in the bird house and sponge this area with a Dauber. Fold over the tabs of the house and adhere to the ornament base. After the house is adhered, lay in the circle.
Make die cuts for the greenery spray from Pretty Pines dies with small pine die from green card stock and pine cones from brown. Use red card stock for berries and sponge all die cuts with matching ink pads and sponge dauber. Die cut a ribbon from a scrap of Champagne Foil paper and adhere it to the bird house. All greenery pieces are adhered with glue dots on the right hand side of the house. Add sequins to pine cones.
Stamp sentiment from Teeny Tiny Wishes stamp set onto Whisper White card stock strip. Cut a banner edge on one side and adhere under the greenery of the ornament. Use handheld hole punch and thread thin ribbon as a hanger.
Tips for this project
Choosing the paper colors can be a great way to incorporate a child’s design choice and get the whole family involved. Remember that there are many colors in nature to work with. Try making random paper pattern choices for a patchwork feel!
To add accents, I used Champagne Foil for the ribbon but it can easily be changed.
Allow kids to sponge on color to the die cuts with a Dauber or a cotton ball. This is a great way to let the kids feel involved.
