Sugarplum Dreams Peekaboo card

Sugarplum Dreams Nutcracker card

Christmas card season is going strong! Making a Christmas card with a Nutcracker as the focal point was so much fun. Coloring therapy is always nice for me. In the Online Stampin Blends Course, I have been coloring up a storm with all sorts of images. I created this little cutie with a Blender Pen and my stamp pads as a bit of a change and lend a different look.

Sugarplum Dreams stamp set

Not only is there a Nutcracker in the Sugarplum Dreams stamp set, but there is a Sugarplum Fairy, Mouse King and a Christmas Tree image. And if you like the convenience of using a your dies, all of the images I listed will work with the Layering Ovals die! Lots of possibilities for the Holiday season and beyond. I chose to color this image with a Blender Pen and my stamp pads. I have been coloring so many images lately that I’m discovering so many new ways to color my stamp sets!

How to create a Peekaboo Card

Creating a Peekaboo Card design is really simple. One principle I stick to is to not overcomplicate the card front in order to let the inside image show well and be the focal point. Die cut accents placed to bring attention to the nutcracker will work to enhance the inside of the card and not separate it from the focal image.

Step 1: In the design of the card, be sure the peekaboo area will still be seen when the card is displayed (standing open). Once determined, create a die cut over the area that will hold the image on the inside of the card, using a Layering Oval die. To give an interest for this version, I used two dies; one with a straight edge to cut the black paper and one a bit larger with a scalloped edge to cut through the red paper. Now my project has a “framed” look to the peekaboo area.

Step 2: Color and place the inside focal image  inside the peekaboo area. Once placed, there will be a blank area inside the card to hold the sentiment, being careful the stamped words will not show through the peekaboo window.

Step 3: Adorn the card front around the peekaboo window and plan subtle stamping. Bright and bold stamping could distract from the focal point and look nice as tone on tone. For your card project, try out fin colors and new images to get a custom look.
