How to Mask a Sentiment

Have you ever looked at a stamp set and wished that the sentiments were stacked or designed in a different configuration, that they would form new phrases? This is exactly what I wanted when looking at the Rooted in Nature stamp set. The sentiments are great as is but how about getting just a little more use from my craft supplies? Yes, please! Let’s take a look at how to use the masking technique on a few stamps to come up with a brand new look.

How to Mask a Sentiment

These beautiful brush lettered words are perfect for this technique because the fonts match. When looking to combine two sentiments, that’s the first thing I look for in order for them to look right together. In this project, I added washi tape over the portion of the stamp that I did NOT want to be stamped to the paper, leaving uncovered only the area that will contain the ink. Working in this way, a new phrase can be designed with careful placement. Full instructions are below.

Step by Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by creating the card base. Score at the 5 1/2″ mark and crease the fold with a bone folder.
  2.  With all of the layers and panel cut, attach the Cajun Craze DSP to the white layer as shown in photo. Adhere this unit to the card base with SNAIL adhesive.
  3. *TECHNIQUE   Apply washi tape over the portion of the rubber stamp that will NOT be added to the card. In this project, I covered up the words “thinking of” and left “you” uncovered on the first stamp. The second stamp has a small area masked, it’s the word “you”. So, we are basically creating the same phrase but a look that has a great deal more impact. Ink up one stamp at a time, remove and discard the washi tape that will be covered with ink, then carefully stamp the image in the proper position. This may take a few test runs before the proper placement is achieved.
  4. Once both images are stamped, the panel ready to be adhered to the Soft Suede layer with SNAIL adhesive.
  5. Wrap a length of Nature’s Twine around the top area of the sentiment unit and thread a copper trinket on the twine before the ribbon is tied in place. I added a Mini Glue Dot under the trinket to encourage it to stay in place as well.
  6. Adhere this unit to the card front with Stampin’ Dimensionals.
