Messy Watercolor in detail | with Video

Hello and thanks for stopping by today! It’s a true joy of mine to help others learn. Learn to channel their creativity into ways to help others or to help themselves with time spent worthwhile. I encourage you to continue to reach out to me to ask for help, I’m here and ready! There have been a few crafters that really like a certain technique but are unable to really get a grasp on how to get the results they are looking for. One of those techniques is messy watercolor.  Let’s tackle taking the mystery out of messy watercolor and help make it work for, and not against, you.

Help with Messy Watercolor

When you leave comments about projects you would like to have me demonstrate, I write them on a little paper pad. Today I am checking one off the list with this demonstration of creating messy watercolor.  Here are my tips for this technique:

Always use Watercolor Paper, as it DOES make a difference.

The best results happen for me with the wet-on-wet technique. Wet the watercolor paper with the Aqua Painter first, before adding the stamp.

Another way to achieve messy watercolor is to ink up a stamp and use a Stampin’ Spritzer to mist the stamp before it touches the paper. Try playing with different generations of ink to get different results.

Start with the lightest color and gradually add in the mid tone to give a little “form” to the stamped image. Adding a darker color is easier than removing unwanted color.

Be sure there are some “clean lines” somewhere in your project, to act as a touchstone and hold the messy look in check. In this project, I kept the branch image crisp and allowed the flower area to get loose and messy. Check out the video tutorial from this week’s FaceBook LIVE session that gives more detailed info.
