Hello and thanks for stopping by today! Do you have a favorite card style or design? Many of my handmade card projects contain watercolor and also some are focused on coloring an image. Today’s project combines two of my favorite styles, a colored image over a watercolor background. Magical Mermaid stamp set is perfect to bridge the two styles together.
I’m playing along with the CAS Watercolor Challenge today. Be sure to visit and check out all of the amazing cards!

Magical Mermaid stamp set
Coloring this mermaid image is always so much fun! There are several fun sentiments packed in here as well as a few stamps to create an interesting background. I had the occasion recently, during an online class, to color in this mermaid image as an example of how to color hair and skin. I saved the image to use in a future project… and here it is! Here’s a tip for hand colored images: run a black marker along the cut edge for a polished look.
How to create a watercolor background
Adding a watercolor background to Magical Mermaid images are a brilliant combination. To keep to my clean and simple design, I chose to only add color to a portion of the background. By dry embossing the flat side of a Layered Oval Thinlit die onto a watercolor paper panel, it left the impression of the oval in a sort of framed area. This helps as a guide of where I need to keep the coloring and it also adds a bit of interest around the watercolored area.
There were four colors used to get the gradient look, applied in layers. For a visual demonstration of this project, see the video links below. (The video for coloring the mermaid image is in my Stampin Blends Online Class)
