Blending Watercolor Pencils for the April Paper Pumpkin kit with Video

Working with an all-inclusive Paper Pumpkin kit is always something I look forward to each month. Today I would like to share one way that I have used the items in this kit with my children, to create teacher cards. There are three different card styles included in the kit but of course you can always choose to make something completely original or follow the included instructions. If you are not a Paper Pumpkin customer yet, you can order it NOW before this kit goes away. Did I mention that there is a free gift inside this kit? We played with the free set of Watercolor Pencils in making all of our cards today.

Crafting with kids is always a great way of making memories. It also helps our children to turn their focus in another direction when we make a craft to send to another person. Fortunately, using Watercolor Pencils and a brush with water is a fun experience for kids and for us kids-at-heart.

To create the watercolored backgrounds for our cards in this kit, we more or less just scribbled the colored pencils onto the watercolor paper and then spread it around with a wet paintbrush. Also included in the kit is a Stampin’ Ink Spot in Basic Black Archival Ink. This ink is waterproof and can stamp directly over the dry areas where you have used the pencils. For this project, my 6 year old son named Trip, was in charge of adding in the color and activating it with water. He did a fantastic job of blending the colors together to get a new color. He liked the blue and pink and was happy to see a rainbow (as he called it). Our youngest son named Nate, who is about to turn four in a few weeks, did a bit of the stamping. He did very well with stamping up the ink pad and getting it to the paper. Well done, boys! For a visual demonstration of making these cards, check out the YouTube video in the links below.

  1. It’s so fun that you craft with your kids! I made a card with my soon to be 3 year old this weekend, too! He got a kick out of running embossing folders through the Big Shot and added lots and lots of stickers to his card. 😀

    • Embossing folders are fun for me too! And I suppose I should confess to stickers too. Not the doctor’s office stickers (naaaa) but the Lisa Frank stickers get me every time!
