Watercolor smooching technique card #3 with video

Today I bring you the third and last in a series of 3 blog post and videos (released on Tuesdays) that feature the technique: watercolor smooching. This is a form of water coloring onto paper that gives an organic sort of coloring. It’s easy and most of all, it’s super fun!

The third form of watercolor smooching is bringing the liquid over to the watercolor paper. Watercolor paper is not as porous as cardstock and allows the liquid to float on top of the paper for a longer period of time. It is very forgiving, and gives the ink back with more water, unlike cardstock. When using this technique, please be conscious of the color of ink you are using, as it will lighten up after more water is applied. This is also an easy form of smooching, as you dip the paper into watered down ink, let it dry and it’s done.

I make sure to let each color dry before dipping into another color so that the colors do not blend. You know, red + green = yuck. For the sentiment, I chose to use simple script in order to compliment the card style. The inks I used for the smooching coordinate with the sequins I used, so the colors and tones are overall complimentary.

The finished card measures 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ (standard US card size) and the watercolor paper is cut just slightly smaller so that it will not show around the edges of the card. I used Butterflies Thinlits for the die cutting with the Big Shot Die Cut Machine. After completing the card, I glued a liner inside the card that will hide the watercolor panel.

YOUR Independent Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator

As Demonstrators prepare for OnStage in November, we will all be busily making “swap” cards. For those unable to go to OnStage, they do not get to experience the swap on a large scale. If you would like to participate in an “Across the Miles Swap”, please contact me to sign up. Here is how it will work: You will need to sign up to participate by November 15th. Once we close off the sign up date, I will contact you to let you know how many cards to make for swap. You will get back as many as you send in. If you want to swap one card, then sign up to send in one card. If you want to swap with all particiants, I will let you know how many to make and that’s how many you will send in and get back. This is a great way to share your work with others and to see what everyone else is doing. I do not anticipate this swap to go too big but if it does then I will break us into groups so as not to have everyone make a ton of cards. Are you ready to join the swap? You have until Nov 15th to sign up. Let’s make it together!

Are you interested in purchasing one of the finished cards featured in my project posts? Visit my Etsy shop for a selection, and if what you are looking for is not there, just drop me a line and I will add it. Thanks!
