Winter Twilight Card for GDP#050 with Thoughtful Branches

Hello Crafters! During the month of August I have been featuring the exclusive limited time purchase stamps & die bundle of Thoughtful Branches. Today’s card is the last in my installment for this month. It does not mean that you will not see more from this fabulous stamp & die combo! It is certainly a keeper for my card making supplies.

Knowing I would use Thoughtful Branches for the Global Design Project’s challenge for this week, I chose to watercolor a scene for the sketch challenge. Please head over to the page and check out the fantastic cards created for the Global Design Project Challenge #050 by clicking here.

I started out my card with watercolor paper and stamped the images of the farthest trees in Smoky Slate, then quickly heat embossed them with clear embossing powder. If you plan your stamping, embossing with regular dye inks is a snap! I also embossed the black trees by heat setting clear embossing powder. The one large tree in the foreground also has an overlay of white embossing to emulate branches of snow. Using Smoky Slate ink, I brushed on piles of snow around the trees to give a grounding to the images. While this dried, I used masking fluid in the form of a pen, to dot the sky with what would eventually be falling snow. Masking Fluid, once dried, allows the paint to resist (much like emboss resist) and can be rubbed off once your work has completely dried.

Moving on to watercoloring the background, I used a #12 round paintbrush and dabbed the pooled ink from the lids of my stamp pads. This method of picking up paint/ink from my stamp pads is a super clean way for me to paint. The stamp pads double as a palette that needs NO cleanup, win = win for me! I chose the colors to go from lightest, near the middle of the card, to darkest at the top of the card. I purposely left color away from the center of the card to lend the appearance of a soft glow.  I painted directly over the masking fluid dots.

After the piece was dry, I rubbed off the masking fluid and trimmed the piece to fit a black cardstock mat that would result in meeting the design requirements for the Global Design Project‘s sketch #050 card. The sentiment is also from Thoughtful Branches and is stamped in black with a hand drawn star sitting to it’s right.

Here are the supplies I used in making my card:

I really enjoyed painting this image and participating in the Global Design Project’s #050 challenge. I hope you visit the page and feel inspired to create your own sketch card. Thanks for stopping over today and feel free to leave me a comment or two.. or three, LOL.

Let’s make it together with Thoughtful Branches and try participating in a challenge!
